iPhone: Updating App Store Applications

Downloading applications for the iPhone and iPod touch from Apple’s App Store means that eventually you’ll be faced with version updates. iTunes isn’t the only resource for downloading those updates. Your iPhone or iPod touch can handle the job, too, and it’s easy to do.

The iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPod touch will let you know when third party application updates are available, and it will also show how many updates are waiting for you. Look for the badge on the App Store icon to see how many updates are ready to go.

App Store lets you know when app updates are available.

To start the update process, do this:

  • Tap the App Store.
  • Tap the Updates icon to see a list of available application updates.

  • Tap Updates to see the app update list.
  • The Updates list shows all of the available updates that haven’t been installed yet. To install all of the available updates at the same time, tap the Update All button.
  • To start the update process, do this:

    • Tap the App Store.
    • Tap the Updates icon to see a list of available application updates.

    • Update All installs all of your third-party updates at the same time.
    • Alternately, tapping on an application lets you install updates one app at a time and see what the update includes.

    • Viewing app version changes.
    • Before the update process starts, you’ll have to enter your iTunes account password. Enter your password and tap OK.

    • Enter your iTunes account password to start updating.

Once the update download process starts, the App Store application sends you back to the Home screen. Updating applications will display a progress bar showing how much of the download is left.

    Monitoring app update status.

Installing iPhone and iPod touch application updates on the go means you don’t have to wait to connect to your computer and iTunes before getting the latest versions of your apps. It works over Wi-Fi, EDGE and 3G data connections, so odds are you’ll be able to get your downloads almost anywhere you go.
