iPod Earns 72% Market Share in December
Tuesday, January 16th, 2007 at 2:00 PM - by Bryan Chaffin
Apple's iPod garnered some 72% market share during December, according to NPD numbers quoted by Apple executives during the company's analyst conference call on Wednesday. During last week's Macworld Expo keynote, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said that iPod had 62% market share during November, a decrease compared to previous months, with the December numbers reinforcing Apple's lead in this market.
"We are happy that iPod maintained its leadership position in the U.S. in the face of increased competition," said Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer during opening remarks for Wednesday's conference call. "Our share of the U.S. market for MP3 players was 72% in the month of December according to NPD."
"iPod sales grew faster," he added, "which resulted in share gains for every country for which we have market data. This gives us confidence that our emphasis on advertising, channel development, and improved supply in these markets has been effective."
Apple's other music revenue also grew during the quarter, rising some 29% year-over-year. Mr. Oppenheimer said this growth was fueled by "very strong sales" through the iTunes store.
