iPod Shows Duke Faculty the Value of Digital Audio

Duke University's iPod project has shown students and teachers the value of digital audio content, according to Tracy Futhey, CIO and vice president for Information Technology at Duke University. In an interview with Campus Technology, Ms. Futhey said that "Over the past year, the iPod project has made clear to many of our faculty and in many of our courses, the value of digital audio in a whole host of domains."
At the same time, however, she also noted that exposure to the idea of using an iPod in the classroom awakened interest in ideas such as using a video device or tablet computer, two areas not covered in Apple's iPod or Macintosh product lines. Ms. Futhey said that the same initiative that brought iPods to Duke will be expanding into those other areas as well.
Duke was the first university to supply iPods to incoming freshman and their corresponding faculty, and to work on the idea of using the devices to incorporate digital audio content into the curriculum. After announcing the project a success in February of 2005, the school renewed the program for the Fall school year.
