Apple/Orange Deal Could Fall Apart
Sunday, October 7th, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
France cell carrier Orange already backtracked from its earlier statement that it will start selling the iPhone soon to say that it wont be carrying the iPhone in time for Christmas. Now it looks like theres a chance it wont be carrying the combination iPod and smart phone at all. France Telecoms mobile phone unit is expected to announce in the next few days whether or not its deal with Apple is off, according to CNNMoney.
Tensions between Apple and Orange have been on the rise as the two companies continue negotiating over how much money the cell carrier will pay Apple in exchange for the rights to offer iPhone service. Apple has been asking for 30 percent of Oranges iPhone-related voice and data revenues.
Last week, a source at Orange said "The risk were evaluating this week is that Apple crosses France off."
Now a France Telecom manager is stating that the company will announce in the next few days whether or not the two companies will continue negotiating or go their separate ways. If the deal falls apart, Apple will have to go on the hunt for a different partner in France.
The U.K. and Germany are still on track for their November 9 iPhone launches.
