Apple and 20th Century Fox may have struck a deal to bring digital movie rentals to the iTunes Store. The deal will bring will bring "on demand" movie downloads from the latest Fox DVD releases to Apples media store, according to the Financial Times.
As part of the deal, Fox will also include FairPlay-protected versions of movies on DVD releases so that users can copy the files to iTunes and then transfer them to a video-capable iPod. One studio executive commented that this part of the deal would enable Apple to "sell a load more video iPods."
Jonathan Weitz, a principal with the media consulting firm IBB Consulting, added "Fox and potentially other studios are coming around to the idea that there is nobody out there to challenge iTunes. This deal is a sign that media mobility is coming to the mainstream."
Apple could officially announce its agreement with Fox as early as Macworld Expo 2008 in January.
