Flash Memory Makers Look to Apple, Sony to Boost Flagging Market
Tuesday, August 29th, 2006 at 3:00 PM - by Brad Cook
NAND flash memory prices have seen a steep decline this year, leading chip makers to hope that new devices from Apple and Sony will give their flagging market a lift, according to a Dow Jones report. In anticipation, flash memory producers have stepped up production, a move that could backfire if they don't see increased demand.
"Apple and Sony will decide the destiny of the NAND flash market in the fourth quarter," said iSuppli Corp. analyst Nam Hyung Kim. "Potential demand from Apple and Sony could consume up to 40% of the global NAND supply in the fourth quarter. But any delay in new product launches will blow away the supply-and-demand balance and will spur significant oversupply and price declines."
Analysts are looking to not only new iPods from Apple but also new MP3 players and a new Playstation Portable (PSP) from Sony. The PSP doesn't contain flash memory, but it does use flash memory for file storage, in the form of flash cards also manufactured by Sony.
