Microsoft: No Blu-ray for Xbox 360

While Steve Baller recently reiterated Microsoft’s overall support for Blu-ray in Windows, another Microsoft executive, Aaron Greenberg, squashed rumors that Blu-ray would be integrated into the Xbox 360, according to Reuters on Wednesday.

Mr. Greenberg told Reuters, "Xbox is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience."

Microsoft recently dropped support for the external HD DVD player when Toshiba pulled the plug on the HD DVD format on February 19th. However, Steve Ballmer recently reiterated overall support for Blu-ray within Windows.

Mr. Greenberg’s comment about integration appears to leave the door open for third party add ons. Also at issue is whether Sony would even agree to a Blu-ray license direct to Microsoft and how much it would add to the price of the Xbox, the Play Station 3’s biggest competitor. In the meantime, Microsoft is focusing on supply problems with the Xbox and Internet video downloads on their game console.
