NPD: Blu-ray Sales Numbers Soaring
Monday, January 21st, 2008 at 3:00 PM - by John Martellaro
In recent weeks, after the Warner announcement supporting Blu-ray, the sales of both Blu-ray players and movie titles have soared, according to NPD sales numbers.
In what was described as a major shakeup by Digital Trends, the sales of stand-alone Blu-ray players has soared in proportion ot HD DVD. During December, 2007, the sales margin for players was 3:2 for Blu-ray despite drastically reduced prices for HD DVD players. During early January, that ratio shifted to 7:3 for Blu-ray. However, in the most recent sales data, after the Warner announcement at CES, that sales ratio is now an astonishing 9:1.
To be sure, the sales data only reflects one week of data, but it also comes at a time when Toshiba has slashed its player prices by 50 percent in some cases.
In addition, sales data from Neilsens Videoscan show a recent tilt in Blu-ray movie titles to 6:1 since the Warner announcement. Previously, that ratio was 2:1 in 2007 and rose to 3:1 in early January.
These numbers suggest a pent up demand for HD content and a customer desire for a clear decision, just as Warner demonstrated, so they could get on with enjoying HD movies. It seems that recent customer purchasing patterns are punctuating that desire to see an end. If so, this consumer bandwagon effect could escalate beyond the control of Toshiba and the HD DVD camp.
