Rumor: iPhone 3G Coming to Wal-Mart
Sunday, October 12th, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Apples iPhone 3G may be coming to a discount retailer near you -- namely Wal-Mart. If the rumors are correct, Apple and Wal-Mart have penned a deal that will let the powerhouse retail start distributing the combination iPod and smartphone come November 15, according to the Boy Genius Report.
Details on the alleged deal are still thin, so there isnt any word yet on whether or not Wal-Marts clientele will be able to activate the phone in the store, or if they will have to complete the process through a different procedure. Currently Apple and AT&T require in-store phone activation when purchasing a new iPhone 3G.
Wal-Mart already sells Apples iPod lineup in its retail locations along with accessories for the portable media players, so the two companies are capable of working out distribution deals. An iPhone 3G deal, however, is a big change from selling iPods and Apple may not be willing to surrender that much control over the user buying experience.
Apple and Wal-Mart have not commented on or confirmed that any kind of iPhone distribution deal is in place.
