Sony Drops Rear Projection TVs
Wednesday, December 19th, 2007 at 3:00 PM - by John Martellaro
Sony will cease to manufacture rear projection 3LCD and SXRD/LCoS TVs after the current supplies are exhausted, according to a Sony spokesperson.
"We are moving our resources more toward LCD TV, because thats what people really want," Sony said in a report, according to TWICE on Thursday.
Sony will continue selling front projection TVs that feature Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) technology, branded SXRD by Sony.
Despite the fact that Sony has had excellent market share of the rear projection HDTV market, their absolute numbers are only a few percent of total HDTV sales, dominated by LCD and Plasma. The consumer love affair with thin HDTVs, often shown in ads hanging on the wall, has also put the handwriting on the wall for the bulky rear projection TVs.
Previously, Philips, Toshiba and Hitachi have exited the rear projection market. Considering that DisplaySearch has projected drastically declining sales, only about 670,000 units in 2008, look for other companies to also focus on the current favorites of HDTV buyers -- those ultra-slim LCD and Plasma displays.
