Just The Facts And More
Friday, June 19th, 2009 at 4:53 PM - by Vern Seward
Did you know that there have been a total of 37 different animal shapes in the Animal Crackers cookie zoo?
I didn't know that. When I was a kid I used to try to figure which animal the cookie was suppose to be in the shape of. I mean, some of those shapes were pretty jacked up.
The camel was an easy one. So was the giraffe. The lion was iffy. The bison I use to mistake for a wildebeest and I don't think I ever got the kangaroo right on the first guess.
Did you know that Mona Lisa, the woman in Leonardo DiVinci's famous painting, has no eyebrows? It was a 14th Century fashion statement. I think it will be popular again. This time I think men should shave the eyebrows. In fact, I think it would be cool to shave all hair from the neck up, but try to grow as much hair as possible from the neck down and go shirtless for all but the coldest days. We should embrace our animal heritage. Doing this would make us feel closer to nature and save a bundle on our laundry bill.
Speaking of guys, did you know that men are 6 times more likely than women to be struck by lightning? This explains why my wife takes out a new policy on me each year at the beginning of Florida's rainy season.
These odd facts do little to advance the breadth of human knowledge, but it could be great conversation openers or pick-up lines and might get you a bit further than, "If I could rearrange the alphabet, I'd put U and I together."
Of course, remembering that slugs have 4 noses can be a chore if you've had a beer or two. Lucky for you there's a free iPhone app called 6500+ Cool Facts.
There really isn't a lot to the 6500+ Cool Facts app; each page displays a simple, but often intriguing fact. Touch the screen to see the next fact. At the bottom of the screen there's a small space reserved for ads. In fact, most, if not all of the facts appear to have been copied from the StrangeFacts.com website (including some misspellings).
Still, the facts in 6500+ Cool Facts are fun and worth the free download.
If you are hungry for more odd or little known facts then you might take a listen to Ah, I Didn't Know That, a short lived audio podcast that is actually kinda fun to listen to.
Hosts Red Howard and Renee Hefferson talk their way through some interesting factual tidbits.
There are only three 20 or so minute episodes, but they cover a lot of stuff and they do sound like they are having a good time.
It's fun and they guarantee you'll learn something new. How can you beat that?
Grab and listen to Ah, I Didn't Know That at the iTunes Store.
Being a storehouse for useless facts is, well... useless. Wouldn't it be great to actually put some of that brain lint to use? Why not take a listen to Trivial Trivia Podcast and see if you are as smart as all that.
Trivial Trivia Pocast is hosted by Sarah and Jeff and they will quiz you on a wide variety of subjects.
This new podcast has only three episodes, but in each nine trivia questions are posed, three in each of the following categories: General Knowledge, Music, and Movies.
It's surprising to find out what you actually do know, and even what don't know, but probably should. It's a good time for all and you'll probably learn something new or remember something you've forgotten.
Trivial Trivia Podcast. It's a keeper.
OK, that's a wrap for this week.
Bye bye until next week when I bring you more free stuff, but if you can't wait that long there's more free stuff from the iTunes Store listed below, with direct links.
