In-Depth Review

Matias MiniRizer

The Matias MiniRizer is a pocket-sized stand for any and all of your little gadgets such as, for example, your iPhone:

MiniRizer with iPhone

It's ingeniously designed -- a pair of slim, transparent acrylic pieces:

Two transparent acrylic pieces

One piece has a silicon pad behind a small "lip" to cushion your device and keep it from slipping.

The second piece has two cutouts so you can view your gadget tilted at either 40 degrees or 50 degrees.

The MiniRizer comes with its own little cloth carrying sleeve and the stand and sleeve together aren't much larger than a dozen business cards and weighs less than an ounce.

I really like this little gadget, especially for air travel. I used to have to switch my iPhone to one of the cases that has a built-in kickstand for plane trips. But the MiniRizer is small enough and light enough to have earned a permanent place in my Mac backpack.

My only real complaint is that the sleeve doesn't stay closed -- there's no snap, zip lock, or Velcro -- so the stand frequently fell out of the sleeve in my backpack or pocket. Not a huge deal and easily fixed by applying a small bit of stick-on Velcro, like this:

Another possible issue is the width of the little lip... If your iPhone or iPod case is too thick, it won't fit behind the lip properly. I found that it worked fine with most but not all of the cases I have around here. So unless your gadget and/or gadget case are particularly bulky you'll probably be OK.

The Bottom Line

The MiniRizer is a nifty little gadget that holds your iPhone or iPod at an angle so you can watch video comfortably. And it can double as a nice little holder for your phone or iPod on your desk.

Just The Facts

MiniRizer from Matias

MSRP US$14.95

Pros:

Works with most iPhone/iPods with or without cases, not bulky, clever design, two viewing angles.

Cons:

Sleeve doesn't stay closed, little lip could be a tad wider.
