Sunday, July 1st, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
AT&T, the exclusive carrier of Apples iPhone, has agreed to purchase the Oklahoma-based cell carrier Dobson for US$2.8 billion. Dobson currently serves the rural midwest, southwest and Alaska, effectively letting AT&T expand its primary coverage areas, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The deal means that Apples popular combination iPod and smartphone may eventually be available in regions that historically have been roaming areas for AT&T customers. It also means that AT&T should be able to save about $2.5 billion in roaming expenses and overhead costs.
AT&T is awaiting final regulatory approval which should come before the end of 2007.
