Adobe: iPhone Flash Not a Sure Thing
Wednesday, March 19th, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Adobe has changed its tune a little regarding the development of Flash for the iPhone and iPod touch. Last week, CEO Shantanu Narayen said that Adobe would bring Flash support to the iPhone, but now the company is saying it needs to collaborate with Apple to make that happen, according to InformationWeek.
The company said in a statement that it has evaluated Apples iPhone software developer kit and can now "start to develop a way to bring Flash player to the iPhone."
Last week, however, Mr. Narayen said "We believe Flash is synonymous with the Internet experience, and we are committed to bringing Flash to the iPhone. We have evaluated [the iPhone SDK] and we think we can develop an iPhone Flash player ourselves."
While not everyone is pleased with Adobes multimedia and Web interface format, there are many users hoping Flash will make its way to the iPhone and iPod touch since some Web sites are not viewable without it.
Adobe added "To bring the full capabilities of Flash to the iPhone Web-browsing experience, we do need to work with Apple beyond and above what is available through the SDK and the current license around it. We think Flash availability on the iPhone benefits Apple and Adobes millions of joint customers, so we want to work with Apple to bring these capabilities to the device."
Apple has not commented on whether or not it will work with Adobe, but CEO Steve Jobs has already stated that he isnt interested in bringing Flash to the iPhone or iPod touch in its current state because of performance issues.
