iPhone Dev Team Delays PwnageTool
Sunday, March 30th, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
iPhone Dev Team missed its planned March 30 release of the iPhone and iPod touch hack tool, PwnageTool, because it was still looking into the legality and validity of the utility. The group plans on releasing the tool "sometime next week."
The group claimed that PwnageTool will allow developers to avoid Apples App Store distribution system and release any applications they want for the the iPhone and iPod touch. The utility works by taking advantage of an exploit in the lower levels of the iPhone and iPod touch software.
iPhone Dev Team also claimed that once the hack is installed it will be very difficult for Apple to break it, so users will likely be able to continue using any unauthorized third party applications they have installed even after applying future iPhone or iPod touch updates.
When PwnageTool is finally available, it will include revised logos and icons, but will not include any Apple licensed software, Intellectual Property, trademarks, logos or images. It will be available for Mac OS X 10.4, Mac OS X 10.5, and Windows.
