    • Beck
    • Beck is the modern master of the groove, and Guero is merely the latest example of this. From the opening power chords of "E-Pro," to the Pac-Man cuteness of "Girl," to the dirge-like lullab

    • Revolting Cocks
    • It's hard to believe it's been more than a decade since Ministry founder and front man Al Jourgensen's side project Revolting Cocks released any new material. 2006 brings us Cocked and Loaded

  • Physical Graffiti

    • 10 out of 10
    • Led Zeppelin
    • This album bears every flavor of genius from the five records that came before. It is, I believe, the band's finest. With Physical Graffiti, Zep came raging back to their musical home territory -- har

    • Spoon
    • Gimme Fiction by Spoon is a terrific album by an Austin band that I was lucky enough to catch on an Austin radio station during a Christmas visit.

  • One Word Extinguisher

    • Prefuse 73
    • It's an album about a breakup, done with beats instead of mopey lyrics. But the beats are raw, and the emotions are there, even if there aren't many words on top of it. While possibly not Scott Herren

iTunes Music Review - Aretha Sings the Blues

  • Aretha Sings the Blues

    • 6 out of 5
    • Aretha Franklin

    • While she didn't always have the best taste in song selection, Aretha Franklin is a must-study for anyone with interest in the human voice. She has the kind of powerful, recklessly passionate delivery that makes me so fond of Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant or U2's Bono, but she had so much vocal control that even in her most sky-searching melodies she always kept her voice clean and melodic.

If you want to buy an album, I'd steer you toward one of her several "Greatest Hits" collections to avoid bum tracks. If you're looking to learn a little more about why she's on the short list of greatest singers of all time, check out the Blues tunes "Trouble in Mind" and "Nobody Knows the Way I Feel This Morning." Also, look to "Today I Sing the Blues" for one of her finest ballad performances.
