ATT: No Extra Charge for iPhone MMS

AT&T is offering up a small surprise for iPhone owners: They won't have to pay extra for the MMS service if they already have a text message bundle, according to a company FAQ.

The FAQ sheet (PDF) reads in part, "Later this summer, as part of the 3.0 software, AT&T will make multimedia messaging (MMS) available at no extra cost to customers with a text messaging bundle. And, in the future, AT&T will offer tethering capability for iPhone 3G S and iPhone 3G."

The news will help soften the sting from finding out that AT&T won't offer iPhone MMS support when iPhone Software 3.0 is released on June 17. Apple announced that multimedia message support would be part of the iPhone software update, but revealed during its World Wide Developer Conference last week that the service wouldn't be available to AT&T customers until later this summer.

Most iPhone carriers will offer MMS and tethering support on June 17, but AT&T hasn't offered a reason for its delay.

Indeed, that is a surprise.

I hate to be cynical, but this is the notorious AT&T that overcharges for everything, so this is probably an introductory rate.  In a year or two they’ll slowly and quietly institute some new vaguely named service fee.

AT&T really needs to announce the tethering plans.  It’s bad enough that it isn’t available, but not announcing the plans means that those of us who need mobile connectivity aren’t stuck not knowing what AT&T will do or when they’ll do it.  This very well may lead us to other carriers for mobile connectivity…specifically Verizon.

I hope that they give us AT&T DSL customers free tethering like they currently do with their wireless hotspots

is tethering really a good deal for business people? It’s not like you can use your phone to receive say, oh, business calls if your computer is attached to it….

An EVDO card is a much better solution, and since they now come in USB flavor, it doesn’t matter what type of computer you have. No PCI or PCIe card slot required.

Hmmm… I’ve read the line about no charge for MMS messaging for iPhone users “if they already have a text message bundle”, several times. The question that comes to mind every time I read that, is ‘What about us iPhone 2G users that get SMS messaging included with our less-expensive data plan, but that don’t specifically have a messaging plan’? I haven’t seen any details about this anywhere, yet.

MMS and tehering are both available and are both free already on AT&T… do a little searching on how to get past the AT&T “walls”... it’s easy to do and i’ve had each feature since the 3.0 firmware was released. and no i have NOT been charged at all smile

AT&T also announced that Tethering and MMS would be here before the end of summer. That gives them exactly three weeks to roll them both out.

Unless they really plan on ticking their customers off and driving them to Verizon the very moment that the exclusive contract ends. Believe me, it would happen.
